Azzurri Court Great Nicola Pietrangeli Dies at 92

The world of tennis says goodbye to a true icon: Nicola Pietrangeli, a double French Open champion, passed away at 92.

The player made history by becoming the pioneering Italian to secure a Grand Slam singles title, earning his initial triumph at the French Open in 1959 and successfully defending the coveted trophy the following year.

With a staggering 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was widely considered the country's greatest ever player prior to the rise of current star and four-time major winner Jannik Sinner.

"Italian tennis is grieving an icon. Nicola Pietrangeli, the only Italian enrolled in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has passed away," announced the national federation.

In addition to his two French Open triumphs, Pietrangeli also reached the final in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He boasts a remarkable 164 matches played for Italy in the prestigious team competition, securing victories in 120 of them, and led his country to its first title in 1976.

Officials of the Italian Open, where he was a two-time winner, stated: "We are profoundly saddened that we say goodbye to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
